End of April Program Recap

Every Northside Spartan team has seen action at this point and the program has shown some real promise early in the season.

The juniors have gotten off to a solid start, with 2018 Scott reaching the silver bracket in two tough tournaments to begin the year.  Cameron Harris (Crawfordsville) and Jack Maller (Fishers) have emerged as offensive leaders, while Xavier Hines (Noblesville) and Caleb Bean (Hamilton Heights) have served as leaders on defense.  2018 Heath-Granger is continuing to gel with lots of new players, but Mekhi Caldwell (Tindley) and Caleb Pack (North Central) have been stellar offensive players.

Coach Scott's 2019 sophomores have completed two tournaments including winning the silver bracket of Easter Classic in their first weekend of play.  Stephen Terry (Brebeuf) was excellent in his first weekend and Mekhi Caldwell (Tindley) has scored in bunches.  Roc Ricker (Guerin) has provided sharpshooting and Davis Schlichte is a steadying presence at the point.

The 2020 class is arguably the program's strongest, with all three teams notching multiple wins in their first weekends of action.  2020 Staal got off to a rocky start in the Easter Classic, but responded by going 3-1 in the National Club Challenge last weekend, sparked by Kolby Bullard's (Noblesville) return from injury.  Ben Weidner (Zionsville) has been superb, averaging over 20 points for the team.  2020 Bernhold kicked off their season last weekend and fought their way to the championship game of the silver bracket in the Spring Run n' Gun.  Levi Calvert (Noblesville) led the team including pulling off what may be the Spartan highlight of the year with a thunderous and-one dunk.  Zach Markovich (Noblesville) and Ben McHenry (Fishers) have been solid in support roles for 2020 Bernhold.

2020 Davis (girls) made history in their first game of the season, notching a win over BC Hatton in the first Northside Spartans girls game in program history.  Since then, they have been competitive in every game, including going a perfect 3-0 last Sunday in route to a tournament win.  Regan Newman (Fishers) has been a star for the team, leading the team in multiple categories.  Lydia Rhodes (Homeschool) and Katie Palikan (Fishers) have shined as well.

2021 eighth grade team notched a win in their first game of the season against NuVision Ballers.  Jackson Manwell (Madison Grant) has been dominant in the paint and Brandon Brooks (Mt. Vernon) has been great despite playing up one year.

2023 is riding an 11 game win streak dating back to last season.  Luke Washburn (Riverside) and Malachi Smith (Skiles Test) have been spectacular in running the team from the point guard position and Anthony Ball (Skiles Test) has off the charts potential and notched a 14 point/14 rebound game in their last win over Indy Netters.

The program has another busy weekend to finish off the month with 2018 Scott, 2018 Heath Granger, and 2020 Staal in action during the NCAA Live Period.  Be sure to follow our Twitter (@TheNS_Spartans) and Facebook (Northside Spartans Basketball) for updates on all of our teams and program information!

Northside Spartans 2018 Heath-Granger Team Preview

The Spartans feature two very strong 2018 teams this season.  Coach Devin Heath-Granger will bring his playing experience at Lawrence Central High School and Goshen College to the sidelines this season as he leads a mixed group of Spartan veterans and newcomers.

Mekhi Caldwell (Tindley) returns and figures to be a potent scorer for the team after notching multiple 30-point scoring games for the 16u team last season.  Luke Mattern (Wabash) is another returning Spartan who will help stretch the floor after leading Wabash in scoring this season (12.8 ppg, 38% 3pt).

Latornce Smith (Lawrence Central) brings elite athleticism and the ability to play above the rim.  Smith can play many difference positions and is much improved after a season at LC.  Kyaire Murray (Zionsville) brings solid fundamentals, phenomenal athleticism, and a stalwart defensive presence.

Caleb Pack (North Central) is poised to explode this season and could be a both a scoring and defensive leader.  Pack brings the ability to score from all over the court and will orchestrate the offense from the point guard position.  Dayon Coe (Attucks) is a Spartan veteran that will contribute with his quickness and ability to penetrate.

The front court is anchored by 6'5" Brody McHugh (Roncalli).  His size will allow him to be a defensive presence and his outside shooting ability will help stretch defenses.  Ben Mitchell (North Central) will serve as a stretch four and will provide some grit on the defensive end.

Derrick Briscoe (Attucks) is coming off a state championship and will be a team leader.  Briscoe can score from all areas on the court and his length and athleticism will create mismatches for opposing teams.  Ty Williams (Southmont) provides knock-down outside shooting and hustle play on the defensive end.

2018 Heath-Granger will kick of their season on April 8-9th with the IndyBall Shootout in Indianapolis.

Northside Spartans 2019 Team Preview

The Northside Spartans 2019 team kicked off their season with a great practice last night.  Coach Scott leads a group filled with Spartan newcomers, but the team is shaping up to have a good season.  The team features two players who are double-rostered between the 2019 and 2018 teams in Xavier Hines and Mekhi Caldwell--both of which figure to be primary scoring options for the 2019 team.  Hines was a key contributor for Noblesville this past season and Caldwell has been sitting out of varsity basketball after transferring to Tindley this season, but should factor into their starting lineup come next season.

Two Spartans return from last season's 15u team.  Jacob Pfeifer (Lawrence North) returns as a strong guard with playmaking and shooting ability.  Stephen Terry (Brebeuf) adds length and the ability to play the stretch four role.

A trio of guards join the Spartans after playing this season with Guerin Catholic.  Roc Ricker should challenge for a starting spot and provides dead eye outside shooting.  Davis Schlichte is capable of playing both guard spots and will be a major contributor, as will Michael Aikman who's midrange to outside shot will be key.

Chris Rachell (Howe) could be the X-factor for this team.  He figures to be one of the top options at point guard where his instincts as the starting quarterback at Howe may help him orchestrate the Spartan offense.  Rachell has both penetrating and outside shooting ability which could make him a huge contributor for the 2019 group.

Tyler Chemelewski (Westfield) is another newcomer to the 2019 group this season.  He has made a name for himself through his hard work and hustle play, as well as his ability to shoot from the outside.  He figures to be in the rotation, capable of playing both the 2 and the 3 positions.

The 2019 team kicks off their season April 1st-2nd with the Final Four Fest in Indianapolis.

Northside Spartans 2018 Team Preview

The roster has been finalized for Northside Spartans 2018 and Coach Scott looks to have a talented 17u group.  Crawfordsville Cameron Harris (6’3”) returns from last season and figures to be one of the top offensive threats after scoring 15.0 ppg at Crawfordsville this season.  Trey Davis (6’1”; Plainfield) joins the team this year and will be a scoring threat as well, scoring 13.7 ppg at Plainfield while shooting 41% from behind the arc.

Brennan Winters (5’10”; North Central) will lead a committee of players handling the point guard position.  For the 16u Spartans last season, Winters averaged 10.8 ppg, 2.5 rpg, and 2.5 apg.  Luke Mann (6’0”; Zionsville) can play both guard spots and could serve as a reserve point guard when needed.  Mann is a gifted passer and was second on the 16u team last year in assists.

Luke Beaver (6’0”; Martinsville) returns as well and will provide another three-point shooting threat on a team filled with dead-eye shooters.  Beaver was a leader for Martinsville this season after recovering from an off-season shoulder surgery.  Last season for the Spartans, Beaver was second on the team with 11.1 ppg and made 35 three-pointers.

The front court features one returning Spartan and three newcomers and will bring a tenacity and defensive presence to the team.  Jack Maller (6’5”; Fishers) returns and should be an offensive presence after leading the 16u Spartans with 11.4 ppg last season.  He’s joined by 6’4” Landon Stetler (Seeger) who’s coming off a nice school season where he averaged 9.2 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Patriots.  Caleb Bean (6’6”; Hamilton Heights) provides athleticism and length as well as a defensive presence.

Sophomore Xavier Hines (6’3”; Noblesville) also joins the Spartans this season after playing 23 games for the Millers this season.  Hines provides length and could challenge for a starting role despite playing “up” a year.

The 2018 Spartans will kick off their season on April 8-9 in the IndyBall Shootout in Indianapolis.

2021 Team Preview

The roster has been made for Northside Spartans 2021 and Coach Snyder shapes up to have a talented group of players for this summer.  6'1" Drew Turner (Fall Creek) figures to be a major offensive piece who can play multiple positions and score all over the floor.  6'0" center Jackson Manwell (Madison Grant) will be a rock down low and providing an offensive and defensive presence.  Eli Lutterman also joins from Madison Grant and showcases excellent quickness and slashing ability.

Luke Naas (Eastwood) will provide a steady presence at the point guard position as well as some outside shooting.  Brady McMullen (Our Lady of Mount Carmel) provides a similar skill set as well as the ability to play both guard positions.  Steele Baumgardner (Southmont) and Danny Laughlin (Mount Vernon) both are versatile wing players who offer shooting and defensive ability.  Nicholas Kaylor will be a reliable frontcourt player who's capable of scoring inside and out.

The team features two 7th graders playing "up", but both of which may challenge for starting spots immediately.  Brandon Brooks (Mount Vernon) is a complete point guard capable of scoring through the jump shot or with crafty driving ability.  Peyton Guider (Zionsville West) can play all backcourt spots and figures to be a reliable contributor.

Good luck to Coach Snyder and the 2021 Spartans as they begin their season!

2019 Grubaums Preview

With the release of the 2019 team, the rosters for our program have been set.  As games quickly approach, here is a sneak peak of our 2019 15u team.

The 2019 class features many scrappy, hardworking players that will play good team ball to win games.  Jack Milton (HSE) returns from last season and figures to be a key offensive contributor.  Nick Mourouzis (Cathedral) also returns and will orchestrate the offense at the point guard position.  Chadd Rowe (North Central) and Will Whitesel (Noblesville) offer versatility at the guard spot and the potential to get hot from outside.

Owen Litzelman (Plainfield) is poised for a breakout season at the 4-spot.  His athleticism and experience may allow him to lead the team in multiple categories.  Players like Hunter Huffine (Cathedral), Luis Perez (Fishers), and Stephen Terry (Brebeuf) will provide depth and consistency at the wing spots, and Evan Price (Zionsville) will provide some stability in the post.  Jacob Pfeifer will also provide experience and physicality on the block.

The 2019 team will kick off their season soon in the Best Choice Fieldhouse Spring Premier League!

2018 Scott Team Preview

The 2017 & 2018 rosters have been set.  Team previews will be posted in the coming days for each high school team.  We kick off with a preview of 2018 Scott.

The team features a blend of intelligent guards, skilled bigs, and versatile wing players.  Trey Davis (Plainfield) and Brennan Winters (North Central) will offer a double dose of steady point guard play.  Davis' shooting ability and Winters' penetrating ability will compliment each other nicely.  Josh Van Dyke (Westfield) will provide a boost at that position as well when available.  Cameron Harris (Crawfordsville) and Luke Beaver (Martinsville) have potential for a breakout seasons on the wing due to their scoring prowess.  Luke Mann (Zionsville), and Zach Penley (Westfield) are dead-eye shooters and will help space the floor.  Kyaire Murray (Zionsville) is an exciting athlete and should be a defensive stopper.  Evan Mitchell (Westfield) has shooting ability, athleticism, and the ability to play multiple positions.  The team is anchored by a pair of Fishers bigs: Tyler Reddan and Jack Maller.  Both are big, physical, and feature polished post moves that will make them a threat on both ends.

5th and 8th Grade Teams Selected

The final rosters for our 5th and 8th grade teams have been determined.  They are posted under the Team Rosters tab.  Coaches will contact team members in the coming days to provide them with practice and team information.

2020 Brengle Sneak Peak:  The class of 2020 returns several players and welcomes lots of new faces to the program.  Ben Weidner & Eli Patchett return as key perimeter players for the team and Zach Sibila and Mark McLaurin return as prominent post players.  The additions of versatile bigs including Zach Byrer and Kincaid McIntosh will add some rebounding and scoring on the inside.  Sharpshooters Jack Keller and Harrison Kirsh will space the floor and help facilitate the offense.  The point guard duties will likely be split between Kirsh and Zack Leedy.

2020 Snyder Sneak Peak: 2020 Snyder features talented ball handlers and good size down low.  Zach Allen, Blake Amundson, & Connor Maris will be key guards for the team, playing in conjunction with Andrew Davis and Ken Dimick.  T.J. LaPlante will be a force down low, especially when playing alongside Kaleb Vonderheide.  Drew Watson will provide some shooting, and Maverick Tebbe adds a skilled player capable of playing multiple positions.

The class of 2020 looks very strong!  We're excited to see their progress this season!

Warner commits to Grace

Congratulations to 2016 wing Charlie Warner on his commitment to Grace College.  Warner, winner of the past two Spartan of the Year awards, led the 2016 Staal team to the most successful season in Northside Spartan history.

Warner and his Westfield Shamrocks take on Fishers in the opening round of sectional play on Tuesday.

We will continue to post any other 2016 commitments as they occur.

Good luck to all of our Spartans as they enter the state tournament!
